Pop-punk ground Cobra Starship, fronted by the incredibly suave Gabe Saporta, have always been the underdogs in the music industry since releasing their debut album in 2006. With every new album came a new sound, and huge hits such as "Good Girls Go Bad" and "You Make Me Feel...", but a new project hasn't emerged for three years. This changes with the recent release of "Never Been In Love" featuring vocals for dance power duo Icona Pop.
The new single is not exact what die-hard fans of the band may have expected, it is definitely far different from what was featured on Viva La Cobra! or Hot Mess, but the track shows growth, evolution and reinvention for a band that never played by the rules. With a sampled Fatboy Slim beat, intriguing piano and a catchy chorus, the track is a fresh, interesting change for the wild and crazy act.
"Never Been In Love" is more retro, 80s pop flare than the electro-pop bangers we are used to hearing from Cobra Starship. In a way, it's a more simplistic party anthem. While the vintage sound may not fit in perfectly with current radio airplay trends, the song certainly has a way to stay lodged in a listener's head long after it ends. "You'd never think a random night can change your life, I know now I've never been in love before," Saporta sings on the sure fire hit.
If the return of Cobra Starship was not enough to garner excitement, the new single features a loud and proud guest appearance from Icona Pop, who give the track just an extra pinch of EDM flavor and energy. "Never Been In Love" is just a taste of the unique direction the band is set to take their music. While no new album will hit shelves until at least next year, the single does boost excitement for what is to come. Saporta has stated Cobra Starship was started so he could make the kind of music he wants, it appears he is sticking to his guns and not chasing past success.
