Song Review: Adam Lambert's Fourth Album is "Comin In Hot" with Release of Second Single

After officially kicking off his fourth studio album era with sultry “New Eyes” last month, current Queen frontman Adam Lambert is giving fans a clearer picture of what they can expect from the upcoming Velvet with the release of a second single.

“Comin In Hot” is an effortless extension of its predecessor in terms of musical style and inspiration; a slow burn, 70s rock-inspired ode to passion. How the new release sets itself apart though lies in the groovy, uptempo supporting production. Funky electric guitar is prominent this time around as Lambert hazily sings of igniting fires in the bedroom.

Instead of trademark high notes and wailing, Lambert seduces potential suitors on the album cut with an enticing, subdued vocal performance. "Novocaine in my mouth, tying my tongue like you do, say my name say it loud, tell me what you wanna do," he playfully croons on the second verse. With references to red wine and weed, the artist preps for a serving of afternoon delight.

Produced by creative duo The Monarch (Kelly Clarkson, Meek Mill), the lustful, psychedelic environment created on "Comin In Hot" gives Lambert room to flex and explore artistic avenues he says have been off-limits to him until now. Paired with a vibe of liberation and pleasure, the throwback influences transport listeners to an euphoric night on the dancefloor, even if the artist's new sound is not taking as many cues from Top 40 radio trends these days.

While the effort may have trouble heating up the pop-friendly radio airwaves, "Comin In Hot" does come off more authentic and current, given Lambert's own creative influences and the career path he is now on. Throw in the fact that he's enjoying life alongside beau Javi Costa Polo, it shouldn't be surprising to hear Lambert in such a frenzied, amorous state of mind.

Velvet will be released in two parts, with Side A arriving in September. No release date has been set for Side B.
