A Study in Scarlet is the very first Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The offbeat adventure debuting the sleuth and his biographer Watson is the story of mysterious murder and a mysterious land (America) and a mysterious religion (Mormonism).
I found a perfectly solid reading copy of his tale adapted by artist
Seymour Moskowitz for
Classics Illustrtated's one hundred and tenth issue.
One source I found says the cover artist is
Mort Kunstler. This quiet traditional scene of the great detective at work is very much at odds with the energetic storytelling by Moskowitz inside.
The classic Holmes short story
"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" from the first Doyle collection
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is also included in this little trove, again drawn by Moskowitz.
There are two more
Classic Illustrated comics featuring Sherlock Holmes, one adapting the fabulous
The Hound of the Baskervilles. Maybe someday I'll be able to find those for nice prices too.
